Caledonia Investments (LSE:CLDN, VFEX:CMCL) CEO Mat Masters presented at the Proactive One2One Investor Forum about the company’s long-term investment philosophy, highlighting its focus on compounding capital and income over time through a disciplined and patient approach.
Masters explained that Caledonia Investments operates with a unique structure, backed by the Cayzer family, which still owns a significant stake in the business. This long-term ownership allows the company to act as “a compounding machine looking to deliver steady returns,” rather than chasing short-term gains. The firm targets returns above inflation of 3–6% over the medium to long term and has delivered approximately 10% annualised returns over the past decade.
The company invests across three core areas: public companies, private capital, and third-party funds. In public equities, Caledonia focuses on high-quality businesses with strong cultures and recurring revenues, often holding investments for many years. In private capital, it partners with management teams to grow UK-based businesses, as demonstrated by the successful sale of Stonehage Fleming, which generated a 3.2x return. Meanwhile, its fund investments provide exposure to US lower mid-market private equity and high-growth Asian markets.
